What it is
The Château de Fontainebleau, located 55km southeast of the centre of Paris is one of the largest French royal chateaux. The medieval castle and subsequent palace served as a residence for the French Monarchs from Louis VII to Napoleon III. Nestled in the heart of 130 acres of parkland, Fontainebleau is the only royal and imperial chateau to have been continuously inhabited for seven centuries. Fontainebleau offers an unparalleled view of French history, art history and architecture. Alongside hunting, ‘jeu de paume’, i.e. Real tennis was one of the aristocracy’s favourite sports. The Chateau de Fontainebleau hosts a court originally built under Henry IV and rebuilt in 1732 having been destroyed by fire in 1702. Restored again in 1812, the ‘jeu de paume’ hall retains almost all of its original features and hosts tournaments throughout the year.
